How To Install XBMC on ATV Software 4.4, 4.4.1, and 4.4.2

While you can do a tethered jailbreak of Apple TV Software 4.4 and 4.4.1, users will find themselves unable to install XBMC. Now thanks to a fix discovered it’s very easy to get XBMC working again on your Apple TV.

First, jailbreak your Apple TV using Seas0nPass if you haven’t already. You’ll need a micro USB cable that’s available here.

Once you’re up and running and have done a tethered boot, you’ll need to SSH into your AppleTV using Terminal on OS X or something like Putty on Windows. The default password is “alpine”. Enter the below commands exactly:

ssh root@apple-tv
mkdir -p /private/var/Applications
cd /Applications
mv * /private/var/Applications
cd /
rmdir /Applications
ln -s /private/var/Applications /Applications
apt-get update
apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-seatbeltunlock
dpkg -i xbmc-20111116-57ba0cb-master-atv2.deb

If you get dependency errors issuing the command apt-get install -f should fix it.

That’s it! Let me know if you have any problems. Also please note that Seas0nPass is not yet compatible with 4.4.2 that Apple just released, so hold off on updating! Seas0nPass is now compatible with 4.4.2.

  1. Hi,
Tried this today but now my apple tv won’t reboot tethered. I get a constant light on the front and a blank screen on tv, any ideas?

    1. You would have to install the update from seasonpass from itunes and then from the software of Seasonpass. You Download the update from their website then in Itunes you click shift+update then look for the update(what ever location in your PC) and then follow the instruction after that do the same but from SeasonPass. That happened to me while trying to install XBMC and that’s how I fixed it.

      1. Thanks for that, it ended up being both computer and cable problems (not sure if I even had it jailbroken properly the first time), re-jailbroke with different cable and computer and now everything is fine!! Turns out ATV2 can be quite picky when it comes to cords ect.
        Thanks for the response!!
