16-Core Mac Pros with Custom Intel CPUs Coming In July?

9to5Mac says a reliable source quotes the Mac Pro as being upgraded next month after Lion’s release.

The Mac Pro hasn’t seen an upgrade in nearly a year having last been updated in July 2010. It looks like Apple is now ready to unleash an extremely powerful Mac Pro with up to 16 cores according to this report.

Will it use Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture? It’s possible, even though 8 core configurations of the Sandy Brige processors aren’t due for release until the fourth quarter — Apple is known to get early access to Intel CPUs.

But a more likely scenario is that Apple has been working with Intel to develop a custom chip just for the Mac Pros. Sources indicate the updated Mac Pro will come in 6, 8, 12 and 16 core configurations.
